In-Office Balloon Sinuplasty

Sinus & Allergy Center

If you suffer from poor sinus drainage, you already know that antibiotics, decongestants, and steroids can do only so much for recurring or chronic sinus issues. Balloon Sinuplasty (BSP), also known as balloon sinus dilation, is a simple office procedure that gently expands the natural sinus openings to fix underlying drainage problems to prevent infections and restore healthy sinuses.

Balloon sinuplasty procedures offer a fast recovery time, high success rate, and have successfully been performed in-office for years. CornerStone Ear, Nose & Throat was the first practice to perform Balloon Sinuplasty in Charlotte in the comfort of the office and remains the leader in the area of minimally invasive treatment of allergic and sinus conditions.

What Is Sinusitis?

Do you suffer from a persistent or frequent stuffy nose, nasal blockage, chronic cough, facial pressure or pain? These are typical symptoms of chronic sinusitis,1 an inflammation or swelling of the sinus lining and drainage pathways, which can lead to poor or blocked sinus drainage.

Types Of Sinusitis

Acute (one episode): Sinusitis symptoms resolve in four weeks or less
Recurrent (multiple episodes or episodes in a year): Four or more acute sinusitis episodes in a single calendar year. Periods of relief are followed by another episode.
Chronic (sustained episode lasting 12+ weeks): Symptoms last for more than 12 weeks. Severity of symptoms may change, but does not completely resolve

Treatment Options

Your doctor may prescribe medications and/or saline rinses to treat your sinus infections. If managing your symptoms with ongoing rounds of medication is not working, your doctor may recommend that a CT scan be obtained to look for persistent swelling of the lining of the sinuses, narrow drainage passages, and other potential causes for your symptoms. Based on those findings, the doctor may suggest balloon sinus dilation or sinus surgery.

What Can I Expect From Balloon Sinuplasty?

The balloon sinuplasty procedure is fast, comfortable, and convenient. It’s done in the sinus doctor’s office and effectively opens your sinus pathway for long-term relief. Many patients notice clearer breathing, improved sleep, fewer sinus infections, and a better quality of life — without medication.

Here’s how balloon sinuplasty works:

  • The physician places a small balloon in the sinus opening
  • The balloon is gently inflated for about five seconds to expand the opening and restore drainage
  • The balloon is deflated and removed
  • The physician treats the next sinus passageway as needed
