Allergy Testing

Sinus & Allergy Center

Charlotte and its surrounding areas are consistently ranked among the most severe in the United States for allergy symptoms due to airborne allergens.

We recommend allergy testing if:

  • You have allergy symptoms (sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, nasal congestion, and itchy skin) that occur in two or more seasons, or occur on a year-round basis
  • Symptoms are not well controlled despite medical management and environmental avoidance measures

We use a carefully selected panel of airborne allergens for allergy testing. These include a variety of pollens (tree, grass, and weed pollen) that cause seasonal allergy symptoms along with other airborne allergens including dust mites, mold, and animal dander that can contribute to year-round allergy symptoms.

Skin Testing

At CornerStone Ear, Nose & Throat, we perform a combination of percutaneous (also known as prick testing) and intradermal skin testing (a test where a small amount of an allergen is injected into the arm). These tests are performed following the Modified Quantitative Testing (MQT) protocol of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy (AAOA). For young children who will not tolerate intradermal skin testing, allergy testing can be completed with just percutaneous (prick) testing.

Blood Testing

Blood testing for airborne allergens can be performed. Blood testing, also known as RAST testing, is typically more expensive and is generally considered less sensitive than skin testing. Its use is generally limited to select cases where patients cannot have skin testing performed.

We offer allergy testing in our office.
